Baseball Loses 2 of 3 to MontevalloBaseball 1

The UNCP baseball team faced off against Montevallo for a three-game series over Feb. 20 and 21. UNCP took the first game, but Montevallo won the remaining two games.

The first two games of the series went into extra innings.

The Black and Gold took the first game 7-6 in the 11th inning, and Montevallo won the second game 5-4 also in the 11th inning.                                

The final game of the series was won by Montevallo 12-8.

Game one

UNCP took this game on Feb. 20 in extra innings. Cody Adkins sent in the winning run in the top of the 11th inning.

He singled to bring in Ben Schmucker.

Montevallo had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the 11th, but Jeremy Hyde popped up to end the game.

Montevallo got on the board first with Matthew Haskins scoring on a hit by Collin Dupree. 

The Braves answered back in the fourth inning though by scoring two runs.

Both of the runs were scored on wild pitches.

Drew Beaver and Victor Zecca were the runners who came home in the inning.

The teams went back and forth until UNCP was able to hold Montevallo scoreless in the 11th to end it. 

Game two

In the second straight game to reach extra innings, Montevallo took this one 5-4 on Feb. 21.

This was the first game of a doubleheader.

For the second straight game, the winning run came in the 11th inning.

Haskins drew a walk which allowed Jacob Whiting to come in to score the winning run.

The Braves opened the game with a two-run first inning.

Collins Cuthrell and Dalton Knight hit back-to-back homers to put UNCP on the board.

Montevallo answered and grabbed the lead in the second and third innings.

They scored two runs in each of those innings to pull out to an early 4-2 lead.

UNCP held Montevallo scoreless after the third inning, but were unable to overtake the lead.

The Black and Gold scored a single run in the fourth inning and the ninth run to force the game into extra innings.

Game three

Montevallo earned the series victory with a 12-8 win in the second game of the doubleheader on Feb. 21.

They used a five-run fifth inning to propel them to the victory.

Haskins singled in Chase Bryant and Dane Hutcheon to cap off the five-run inning. Montevallo opened the game with a two-run first inning.

Haskins and Hutcheon led Montevallo with four and three RBIs respectively.

Zade Denton, Schmucker and Zecca led the Black and Gold with two RBIs each.

Drew Cole and Zecca led the team with three hits.
