University Announces New Logo

University Announces New Logo

After voting from students, faculty and staff, alumni and the outside community, UNCP unveiled its new logo that will be part of its new branding program.

Announced by the university on Jan. 20, the new logo has a representation of the columns in front of Old Main with a rising sun coming out of the top right side. This logo will be used for many different promotional purposes.

Tim Locklear designed the logo as a part of the community entrance into the contest that sought designs from students, faculty and staff as well as outside sources.

Locklear works at Cyna’s Jewelery in Pembroke, N.C. and has designed many images depicting the Lumbee Tribe for Cyna’s.

“I appreciate the opportunity that the university offered to the community to be involved,” Locklear said in a press release from the university. “I understand that Old Main is the pinnacle symbol of the university to this community.”

Advertisements and other merchandise will soon sport the new logo.

“We are thrilled to launch UNCP's new logo featuring a presentation of our most historic building, Old Main,” Chancellor Kyle R. Carter said in a press release. “The significance is even more meaningful because the design came from the local community and was vetted by alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members. I look forward to seeing the design on banners, brochures and apparel in the near future.”

In the past, the university used its seal in place of the logo, which many in administration felt the seal is to be reserved for more exclusive instances like diplomas and official documents. The new logo will be used more widespread.

“It had to speak volumes and be simple, because the logo will be used on so many applications,” Locklear said.

The new rebranding initiative will be used as the university moves forward in trying to expand its name beyond the region.

“Numerous members of the university have worked toward this branding initiative and we’re happy to have all the pieces now in place,” said Sandy Briscar, executive director of University Communications and Marketing, in a press release.
