UNCP Cross Country Finishes Season with Disappointment

UNCP Cross Country Finishes Season with Disappointment

The men’s and women’s cross country teams finished out their season Nov. 22 at the NCAA Division ll Southeast Regional Championship at Montevallo, Ala. The two teams had high hopes going into the meet but didn’t finish the way they would have liked.


The men’s team finished one place higher than last year with 179 points, placing sixth out of the other 23 team that competed. The Braves were the second team to finish in the Peach Belt Conference behind Columbus State with 128 points.

All of the top five runners in a Brave uniform were within a minute and a half of each other.

Transfer Tim Sigmon led the Braves to a sixth place finish for the 10k and was the only one to finish in the top 20 for the Black and Gold.

Sigmon placed 19th with a time of 33:29.87.

Junior Matt Reith earned the second place title for the Braves with a 29th place finish and time of 33:57.63.

Young team

“I’m very proud of everything our team has accomplished this season. Our post season may not have truly reflected the amount of talent we had this year, but we are young team and can’t wait until next year,” Reith said.

Senior Jamar Davis and junior Nebiyou Aynu were the third and fourth runners to cross the finish line for the Black and Gold Davis (39th, 34:26.85) Aynu (45th, 34:40.57).

The fifth runner for the Braves was Junior Tyler Moore notching time of 34:56.55 and placed 55th.’

Junior Joel Johnston (84th, 35:47.29 and sophomore Wilson Pearson (106th, 36:30.05) rounded out the runners for the Black and Gold.


Sophomore Olivia Lowman led the Lady Braves to a 14th place out of the 26 teams who competed in the women’s 6k.

Lowman was one of the top 50 runners to finish with 48th place out of 183 runners and notched a time of 24:27.13.

“It was a difficult course, but it was my teammates that allowed me to finish strong,” Lowman said.

Junior Savannah Fornshell and sophomore Lea Tardanico were only 10 seconds behind Lowman and were the second and third Lady Brave to cross the finish line in (56th, 24:36.78) and (57th, 24:37.28) respectively.

Team spirit

“This weekend was my favorite race of the season. I’m so proud of our team this season. We’ve been through a lot, but I think we grew stronger, not as just individuals but as a team as well. I’m excited to see what track and next cross country season holds for us,” Fornshell said.

Junior Kyndal Boykin finished in 96th with a time of 25:36.36.

Senior Kendra Dorn finished out her cross country career here at UNCP placing 116th with a time of 26:21.25.

This meet rounded out both of the Black and Gold’s seasons.
