The UNCP wrestling team went 1-2 on Nov. 23 when they squared off against American, Lindsey Wilson and N.C. State at the Wolfpack Duals in Raleigh, N.C.
The first meet of the day was against American, and UNCP fell 25-15 in that meet.
The Black and Gold had four wrestlers get victories against American. Daniel Ownbey, Haydyn Fry, Juan Stimpson and Chris Giddens all registered points for the Braves.
Ownbey, Stimpson and Giddens won by decision. Fry won by injury default.
The Black and Gold’s one meet victory on the day came against Lindsey Wilson. They defeated Lindsey Wilson 22-13.
The Braves were behind 10-7 in the contest with Lindsey Wilson, but consecutive victories by Stimpson and Terrance Zaleski gave the Black and Gold the lead.
Stimpson tied the meet up with a decision win over Rhodes Bell, and Zaleski then gave UNCP a six-point lead when he pinned Lofton Wright.
Stuart Nadeau and Giddens won two of the last three matches of the meet to hold onto the lead.
UNCP lost to Lindsey Wilson last season, but this win gives the Black and Gold a 2-1 all-time record against them.
The final meet of the day saw the Black and Gold go up against N.C. State.
UNCP got three decision victories, but the Wolfpack won all the other matches on their way to a 29-9 meet win.
Ownbey, Zaleski and Mikey Thomas were the Braves who registered the decision victories. Ownbey defeated Chris Wilkes at the 141 pound weight class.
Zaleski, in his second win of the day, won a close 11-8 decision over Lee Davis. Thomas beat Bill Cook with a 7-3 decision.
