Seniors Kevin Vigebo and Sam Miles gave the 2-1 victory to the Braves during the matchup against Clayton State on Sept. 27 at Varsity Grounds.
After a scoreless first half, Vigebo took the lead of the offense and scored the first goal of the night, and his first goal of the season, less than 30 seconds after the beginning of the second half.
Vigebo received an assist from senior Brett Luccia.
Miles secured the victory at the 48:23 mark when, after a foul outside the box, he placed a free kick in the lower left corner of the net.
This goal is the third goal of the season for the New Zealand native.
The result represents the second consecutive victory for the Black and Gold (2-3-2,1-1-0 PBC) and its first victory in conference action.
The 2-1 score for UNCP also represents the second-straight loss for Clayton State, who still dominates the series against the Black and Gold.
“It was a good win for us,” head coach Phil Hindson said. “The team has started to come together.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson broke his personal record this season by saving seven shots, four of them in the second half, and allowing only one goal.
This is also Perkinson’s second victory as a goalkeeper for the Black and Gold.
Miles ended the game with two shots.
Sophomores Clayton Gannaway and Ricky Chavez, freshman Nathan Legge, senior Reece Rooney and Vigebo took one shot each.
Shepard led the offense for the Lakers with five shots, juniors Paul Lawless and Jonny Evans also contributed with three shots apiece.
Senior goalkeeper for the Lakers Nick Punter was able to stop only one shot during the 90 minutes of action.
