Michael Severy joined UNC Pembroke on July 1 as director of the Office of Student Life.
A division of the Office for Student Affairs, Severy will direct programs for students including Student Government Association, Association for Campus Entertainment and other clubs and organizations. The office plans Homecoming, Parents Weekend and the Distinguished Speaker Series among other events.
He reports to Dr. Tom Corti, associate vice chancellor for the Office of Student Affairs.
“We are excited to have Mike Severy join the UNCP family,” Dr. Corti said. “He brings not only the experience of a seasoned professional but also new and innovative ideas.”
Severy comes to UNCP from the University of Illinois where he was assistant dean of students and director of New Student Programs in the Office of the Dean of Students. He was responsible for a budget of $1 million and orientation of approximately 8,000 new students and their parents annually.
He said he is pleased to return to a smaller campus.
“A small campus atmosphere is very attractive to me,” he said. “UNCP is a community oriented campus with a student focus.
“There is great potential for growth and success in student life here with many opportunities to engage students,” he said.
Severy has spent his entire career working with students in higher education. Before moving to the University of Illinois, he was director of Student Involvement and Leadership at Mt. Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., he served as an enrollment services representative before being promoted to assistant director of admissions.
“I believe that students are developed over time through a series of meaningful experiences,” he said. “I enjoy working with students to help them create their own relevant and meaningful experiences.”
A Lansing, Mich., native, Severy is returning to North Carolina where he earned a Master of Arts degree in student development at Appalachian State University. At Appalachian, he was named Graduate Student of the Year in his program and the Gregory S. Blimling Outstanding Graduate Assistant of the Year for his work as a graduate leadership educator.
Severy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing with a minor in psychology from Central Michigan University.
“My family and I are very excited to be back in North Carolina,” he said. “We have many great memories here.”
At UNCP, Severy finds an experienced office and a friendly environment.
“The University and our office are in transition because of growing enrollment,” he said. “I look forward to building on the successes and talent that are in place while developing new opportunities for student involvement.”
His door will remain open, Severy said of his management style.
“I enjoy working with the student experience and will work hard to communicate effectively with students and our student organizations,” he said. “I have met a number of students already. They are talented, ambitious, engaged and remarkably polite.
“While remaining mindful of our vision, I will strive to continuously improve our work with students and the University.”
