The new Bert’s Café and Wingery opened August 14 in the James B. Chavis University Center of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Bert’s Café was given a New Orleans-style makeover this summer, featuring wings with 16 special sauces. WOW serves fresh chicken and also dishes up wraps, quesadillas, salads, subs, burgers and chicken strips. Weekly specials may include ribs, shrimp and fish recipes.
Sodexho Food Services, UNCP’s food service company, teamed up with WOW, an up-and-coming franchise operation with an appetite for college dining.
“Wings are a great comfort food on college campuses, and we can deliver fresh chicken with a different flavor every day if you want it,” said Chris Collins, WOW’s director of institutional development and senior operations consultant. “As a New Orleans company, we are known for our spices, sauces and flavor.”
The café was colorfully remodeled with new and expanded seating and 14 TVs, including 11 in booths and two 42-inch plasma models. Bert’s will feature DirectTV with the NFL package for Sundays.
WOW and Sodexho have hooked up on several campuses including George Washington University, Tulane and the University of Texas in 2008. They are pleased with Bert’s location.
“They have done a great job on Bert’s this summer,” Collins said. “It’s one of our most beautiful locations with a lot of character.”
Mike Nance, Sodexho’s area regional manager, is hooked on the WOW concept.
“We’re really excited about this fresh concept,” Nance said. “The colors are vibrant, and there is a lot of excitement.”
More seats and more music is the ticket for Bert’s WOW Café and Wingery.
WOW replaces Taco Bell, another favorite of UNCP diners, but not for long.
“Taco Bell will return in the old Bookstore location with an expanded menu,” Nance said. “We had requests for more menu items from our Taco Bell express and now we can deliver.”
