Mac and Sylvia Campbell of Elizabethtown, N.C., have a habit of helping students at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

They recently established their second scholarship at the University and in 2006, the Wellness Center was named for them. The Campbell’s second endowed or permanent scholarship will provide financial aid to a football player for summer school.
“In talking with Coach (Pete) Shinnick and Dan Kenney (Athletic Director), they said they could use some help in keeping kids at the University during the summer,” Campbell said. “In summer school, players are able get ahead in their studies.”
Campbell said football has been good for the University.
“Wherever I go I hear a lot of enthusiasm for football at UNCP,” he said. “It is important for the University, and the football program has exceeded my expectations.
A regional oil and gasoline distributor and owner of a chain of convenience stores, Mac Campbell is a 1968 graduate, a director for the UNCP Foundation, past president of the Braves Club, a former University trustee and recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Besides his work with UNCP’s Braves Club, Mac is past president of NC State University’s Wolfpack Club. In 2001, he was named Volunteer of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics.
Dan Kenney, who nominated Campbell for the Volunteer of the Year Award, said he is a great and long-time friend of UNCP and its students.
“Mac and Sylvia Campbell have been great supporters of UNC Pembroke,” Kenney said. “The Campbell family has been very supportive of football here and the creation of the scholarship is another example of that.”
Campbell Oil Company held the grand opening for its Pembroke Minuteman convenience story on May 1. It features Melvin’s hamburgers and UNCP black and gold décor.
The Campbells have four children and 10 grandchildren. Sylvia Campbell is very active in her community and is currently serving as mayor of Elizabethtown.
