Marvin Miller has been named associate director of the Office of Financial Planning and Budgeting at UNC Pembroke.
Miller’s job is to provide information and projections about financial and other resources to help the University plan its long and short range future.
Among his immediate priorities is to assist UNCP with the BANNER payroll project moving payroll services from the state’s central payroll to a UNC General Administration shared services organization.
Miller is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 17 years experience with the state and three years in higher education leadership. He reports to Roger Killian, director of Financial Planning and Budgeting.
Miller joined the University on a permanent basis in April.
“I am enjoying UNCP, and I believe my experiences in budgeting and financial planning will benefit the University,” Miller said. “Working in higher education finance, I acquired a vision of how administrative functions support the student mission.”
Miller will assist the University in several challenging projects.
“Our job is to find the resources to carry out programs and keep the jobs that keep the University operating at a high level,” he said. “These are challenging times, but higher education is a challenging field.”
An Annapolis, Md., native, Miller worked for the North Carolina Utilities Commission as an accountant and for the Office of State Budget and Management in financial analysis with state agencies including UNC and the state’s community colleges.
Trained as an engineer, Miller earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked for Rockwell International, Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Systems and Kennametal’s Mining Tool Division in the areas of budgeting, manufacturing, and facilities operations.
Miller took post graduate courses at North Carolina State University and earned his Certified Public Accountant licensure. He worked for Arthur Andersen & Co., one of the nation’s largest accounting and consulting firms, and ITT-Telecom as a senior financial analyst and controller. For Louisburg College, Miller served as chief financial officer and vice president for finance.
He is married to Cathy Miller, a nurse at Rex Hospital, and they have two children in high school, Melissa and Alex.
