Educational Leadership and Counseling

Message from the Chair

Dr. Jeffrey Warren

Welcome to the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling.  I am proud of our department and the contributions our faculty make to support the missions of the School of Education, UNC Pembroke, and the UNC System.  I hope this website provides useful information about our educational programs, faculty, and students and demonstrates how we "change lives through education" in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling.

A central component of our mission is student success.  As a unit, we understand that the success of K-12 students hinges on our preparation of competent, collaborative, and committed professional school counselors and school administrators. Furthermore, our clinical mental health counseling students are equipped with the knowledge, attitudes and skills to meet mental health needs across the lifespan.

Our graduate-level, educational degree programs include Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC), Professional School Counseling (PSC), and School Administration (SA).  We also offer licensure-only programs in Professional School Counseling and School Administration as well as a graduate certificate in Advanced School Counseling for Postsecondary Success (ASCPS) for individuals holding the appropriate credentials.  Our programs are led by experienced, award-winning scholars and educators who hold licenses and credentials in their respective fields.  Directors of each program maintain a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for work in an ever-changing society. Our education programs have an excellent reputation; among these, our CMHC and PSC programs are nationally accredited by CACREP and recently received a Professional Identity Award from NBCC.  Our MSA Program fellowship programs is well-known for producing exemplary school executives who hold leadership positions throughout North Carolina and beyond. Across all of our graduate programs we are committed to professionalism at the highest level and preparation of our students as leaders in their respective fields.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is known for its diversity, personal touch, celebrated heritage, and strong support for regional initiative.  The Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling embodies these characteristics through its rich history of academic excellence. Our core faculty engage in a wide range of activity including student mentoring, research, scholarship, grant projects, and service that advance their respective fields and contribute to the larger community. These efforts are tied to our educational missions and integrated throughout our coursework. We are also committed to integrating departmental scholarly efforts with colleagues throughout the School of Education and campus as well as the region, state and national levels. A few examples of these efforts are the grant funded partnership with the Sandhills Regional Educational Consortium (SREC), the annual SOAR! Conference on Pk-16 Regional Student Success, the nationally funded PSC grant studying the impact of RAMP vs. non-RAMP status school counseling programs on the career and college readiness of NC students.

In summary, the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling prepares educational leaders and professional counselors that are competent, collaborative, and committed to meeting the needs of the students, families, and clients they serve.  This is accomplished with an emphasis on excellence, equity, inclusiveness and professionalism.  We strive to change lives through education. Thank you for visiting with us.
