Faculty Colloquium: “Back to Basics: Reflections on Teaching Literature”

April 12, 2017

PEMBROKE, NC—On Wednesday, March 1, the Department of English’s Student Engagement Committee held a colloquium in which faculty were invited to discuss their varied approaches to teaching literature; both traditional and online. Faculty were encouraged to share syllabi, assignments, and/or reading lists in small groups in an effort to generate discussion of best practices in course planning. Professors Charles Tita, Michele Fazio, Jessica Pitchford, and Abby Mann discussed their approaches to teaching literature in an online forum, comparing their methods of aligning course objectives with online modules as well as proffering strategies for teaching students to navigate the course content. Meanwhile Professors Monika Brown, Sara Boissonneau, Walt Lewallen, Autumn Lauzon, Steven Hedgpeth, and Ginny Garnett shared their experiences teaching research-based assignments in the literature classroom.

Dr. Lauzon said she was “grateful for the opportunity to share ideas with friends and colleagues and to learn about what they do in their own classrooms.”

Building on the momentum established by this event, the First-Year Writing Committee hosted a similar forum in which faculty were encouraged to share copies of their favorite Composition assignments.
