Student Publications Win State and National Awards

March 1, 2017

The results of the 2016 NC College Media Association competition were announced at the annual NC CMA Conference on Saturday, 25 February 2017, at Elon University, and five UNCP students were recognized for their work in two publications advised by English faculty members.

Student contributors to the 2016 issue of The Aurochs, the literary and arts magazine advised by Dr. Karen Helgeson, received three awards:  Alfredo Irra, an Art major and May 2016 graduate, won Second Place in Two-Page Spread Design for “Artificial Flight"; Art major Jai Woods won Third Place in Photography/Art for "Fragile Kindness"; and Editor-in-Chief Jack Pevyhouse, who graduated in December 2016 with a degree in English, won Honorable Mention in Poetry "Mail from the Poetfriend."

Students on the staff of Back to the Future, the 2016 edition of the Indianhead yearbook advised by Sara Oswald, received two awards:  Christian Happel, a senior Art major and Editor-in-Chief of the forthcoming 2017 edition, received Third Place in Photography, and Krystin Hanooman, who graduated in December 2016 with a degree in Biology, won Honorable Mention in Sports Copy.

Both The Aurochs and Indianhead had earlier received national recognition from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, which awarded Gold Medalist certificates to both publications for their 2016 issues; those awards were announced in Fall 2016.
