The senior Dial graduated from Pembroke State College for Indians in 1947, and his wife, Reece, graduated in 1941.

Established in honor of "the Greatest Athlete in the World", the Jim Thorpe Scholarship at UNCP will assist a full time undergraduate student, preferably majoring in American Indian Studies. The applicant shall have a demonstrated financial need. One $300.00 scholarship will be awarded in the fall of the year. The scholarship is renewable.
