Freshman Ashlii Thompson and sophomore Laura Bird finished in a three-way tie for first place to lead the 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke women's golf team to its second Peach Belt Conference team title in four years on April 19 at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.
In the playoff, Bird and Thompson were bested by Flagler’s Joanna Yoo. It was the fourth top five finish of the season for Thompson, who finished the tournament at three over par. She lost on the second playoff hole.
Bird, a Pembroke native and Purnell Swett High School graduate, turned the second career top-five finish of her career. Dana Watkins, at four over par, tallied her first career hole-in-one on the par-three, 170-yard second hole en route to finishing in a tie for fourth place. Kelly Sumner (+12) and Lizzie Bundy (+14) finished in a tie for 25th and 29th place, respectively.
With a team score of 22 strokes over par, UNCP combined to shoot 306 and out-pace the rest of the eight-team field by five strokes. Nationally 26th-ranked Montevallo (+27) finished as the team runner-up, while 6th-ranked Flagler (+29), 18th-ranked Lander (+32) and 10th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic (+36) rounded out the top 5.
