UNC Pembroke’s Broadcasting Program of the Department of Mass Communication was notified in early December that its entry won second place in the student category of the 2010 Ava Awards.

The Ava Awards were established by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) to recognize outstanding work in audiovisual production. Judges award platinum, gold, and honorable mention in 20 main categories, including commercials, news, corporate and government video.

The winning episode, representing the fall season of Carolina News Today, included coverage of campus fire safety, Harmony Walk and Taste of Cultures, a campus t-shirt competition, the Bookstore’s “bedazzled” bras for breast-cancer awareness and sports coverage, among other content.

The entry for the judges was put together by producer Jon Baez, associate producer Dante Durant, and director Carlos Roy, with returning students Anthony Maerten, Catie Andrus, Daniel Shipp, Endira Morales, Andrew Fetch and Alex Williams.

Carolina News Today’s adviser is Dr. Jamie Litty, department chair.

“I’m really proud of them and all the other students who work behind the scenes during the week and during the live mix every Wednesday morning during the activity period,” said Dr. Litty.

“It’s a complicated production, and we have students at all stages of their broadcast education working on the show,” she said.

Engineering for Carolina News Today and other WNCP studio or remote productions is provided by Assistant Director of Broadcasting George Johnson.

“When you compete, there’s very little room for error, but in the broadcast practicum, pedagogy comes first,” Dr. Litty noted.  “It’s about student learning, so there are going to be mistakes.

“Still, when everything falls into place like that and gets recognition, you’re reminded that you’re doing something right,” she said.
