Wiley Barrett sworn in as new UNCP trustee

Dr.Wiley Barrett was sworn in on June 7 as UNC Pembroke’s newest trustee, during the Board of Trustees summer retreat at the Chancellor’s Residence.

Dr. Barrett is a 1969 UNCP graduate, a career educator and a former elected member and chair of the Moore County School Board.

A Southern Pines resident, Dr. Barrett was appointed by the UNC Board of Governors to serve a four-year term. State Rep. Jamie Boles, who represents Moore County, also assisted in the nomination process.

Dr. Robin Cummings, chair of UNCP’s Board of Trustees, welcomed Dr. Barrett to the board.

“I am very pleased with Dr. Barrett’s appointment to our Board,” Dr. Cummings said. “He is a distinguished UNCP alumnus, and has maintained his involvement with the university over the years. His experience and insight as a leader in education and his local ties will definitely prove valuable to the Board. I appreciate Representative Boles making the nomination.”

Dr. Barrett graduated from Pinecrest High School. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from UNC Pembroke, a master’s in education from UNC Charlotte and his doctorate in education from Campbell University.

Barrett played basketball for four years at UNCP. He noted, “I tell folks my four years at UNCP were the greatest years of my life. I am still in touch with my old teammates almost on a weekly basis. I enjoy working closely with coach Ben Miller and his staff to promote our basketball program.”

Dr. Barrett had a 30-year career in secondary education. He served as a teacher and principal in the Moore County school system, retiring in 2001 as principal of Cameron Middle School. During his tenure, he was recognized as Teacher of the Year, Wachovia Principal of the Year, received the Young Educator’s Award and was president of the Tar Heels Association of Principals and the Moore County’s Principals Association. He was also a delegate to the North Carolina governor’s and White House conferences on information services.

Active in Moore County, Dr. Barrett was elected to the Moore County school board in 2002. He served on numerous boards and organizations, including the Education Foundation, First Tee, National Alliance for Mental Health, Jaycees and others.

Dr. Barrett coached at Pinecrest High School and Southern Pines Middle School and is an active sports referee, having officiated in nine state championships at the high school level. He is an avid golfer and was parking chair for the U.S. Open Senior, Women’s and Men’s golf tournaments.

“We welcome Dr. Barrett to the Board of Trustees,” said UNCP Chancellor Kyle Carter. “UNCP has a close relationship with Moore County through our distance learning program at Sandhills Community College. Many residents enjoy our entertainment opportunities at Givens Performing Art Center. Dr. Barrett will bring a valuable perspective and voice to the board.”
