UNCP’s admissions Web site gets an ‘A’ rating

A national research firm ranked UNC Pembroke’s Web site among its top-ranking national admissions sites.

Web sites were rated on a scale of 1-100 using a wide variety of functionality standards. Although UNCP’s score of 78.21 showed room for improvement, it far exceeded the national average of 49.57.

UNCP was the only college or university in North Carolina to get into NRCCUA’s top 15. Only 157 institutions received an “A” rating.

Out of 3,000 Web sites surveyed, finishing number seven is good news, Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said.

“We are pleased that UNC Pembroke’s Admissions Web site was ranked among the top ten in the nation by NRCCUA,” Chancellor Meadors said. “We believe the ranking reflects UNCP’s understanding of our Web site’s importance as a linkage tool between prospective students and the University. It is also very rewarding to see our staff’s hard work recognized by others.”

The importance of a Web site in the admissions process is paramount, said Jackie Clark, vice chancellor for Enrollment Management.

“The Web site is a means by which UNC Pembroke can reach prospective students and family members 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all over the world,” Clark said. “We are pleased with our rating and look forward to making our admissions Web site even better.”

The NRCCUA developed an Enrollment Power Index (EPI) to rate Web sites. In its 8th year, the EPI measures Web sites’ ability to take prospective students through the application process.

Standards are set in five categories: (1) home page and prominence of link; (2) admissions page design and navigation; (3) online access to admissions materials; (4) ability to find key admissions information; and (5) ability to contact the admissions office.

UNCP is working to improve several areas of the Web site said Lawrence Locklear, Web publisher for University and Community Relations, which coordinates www.uncp.edu.

“Our goal was to build the best university Web site in North Carolina, so being ranked among the best in the nation is very exciting,” Locklear said. “However, with ever-changing technology, there is no time to rest.”

Upcoming are live Web cameras on campus, an online campus map and an online campus tour, he said.

“Our Web site features good fundamentals such as consistent design and ease of navigation,” Locklear said. “Strong design and extensive use of photographs are also real positives for the site.

“It has been a team effort across campus to improve the site on a consistent and conscientious basis, and it looks like our work is paying off,” he added.

The NRCCUA has been a national leader in assisting college admissions programs for more than 30 years, said Ron Morris, NRCCUA director of admissions marketing research.

“Our in-depth and comprehensive research tells us that innovative admissions Web sites are increasingly more important to students as they consider their college options,” Morris said. “ With all of the online technology there is today, students want – and expect – a site that they can relate to and navigate easily.”
