UNCP students benefit from fast-paced mentoring sessions

UNC Pembroke’s Office of Student Involvement and Leadership recently hosted the second annual Minute Mentoring leadership program.

Minute Mentoring is a fast-paced mentoring session which connects students with faculty and staff in building strong mentoring relationships across campus. Event coordinators hope the connections made on September 28 will lead to potential career opportunities.

Four professors served as mentors, meeting with students for rapid-fire advice sessions. Dr. Emilia Bak, a Mass Communication professor, was among the ‘mentors-in-residence.’

“Those students that attended the session are the ones that are going to lead next,” said Bak. “I hope that I can be a resource for them. It excites me that I can be a resource to those who will be out there working pretty soon.”

Bak compared Minute Mentoring to speed dating.

“It’s like speed dating, but at the same time, it is mentoring,” said Bak. “Every student will get the chance to meet with every mentor.”

While the event is considered a women’s leadership program, Bak pointed out that Minute Mentoring isn’t solely for female students. The event welcomed all students seeking career advice.

Women want equal opportunities in all fields of work and that is what the Student Involvement and Leadership program is looking to accomplish.

Also serving as mentors were Hannah Baggott, a lecturer in the English, Theatre and Foreign Languages Department; Dr. Shilpa Pai, a psychology professor; and Kathryn Kelly, an addiction specialist with Counseling and Psychological Services.

The mentors assisted students in acquiring leadership skills in the field they are studying.
