UNCP Art Department presents exhibition featuring Sonya Clark

August 17, 2017

Sonya ClarkThe A.D. Gallery on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke will present an exhibition featuring renowned visual artist Sonya Clark.

“Sonya Clark: Rooted” will be on display August 19 through September 24. A reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on September 7. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

“Sonya Clark: Rooted” reveals the artist's ongoing engagement with black hair as a medium and a subject. The exhibit includes pieces that revel in cultural pride, artistry, heritage, and process. Throne, a salon chair tricked out in glass beads celebrates the site in which hair becomes a crowning glory. Stitched into combs is a quotation of one of America's first self-made women millionaires, Madam C.J. Walker.

She speaks of her rise from the cotton fields of the South to her hair care enterprise. Also included are 11 photographs from Clark's Hair Craft Project in which her body became a canvas for several Richmond-based hairdressers to work their magic. Authorship is important here. Each hairdresser appears in the photographs as a presence bearing witness to her distinct creativity and craft.

Clark is a distinguished research fellow in the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, serving as chair for the Craft/ Material Studies Department from 2006 to 2017. She holds degrees from Cranbrook Academy of Art, the School of Art Institute of Chicago, and Amherst College. Her work has been exhibited in over 350 museum and galleries in the North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. The A.D. Gallery is located in Locklear Hall. For more information, call 910.521.6405 or email joseph.begnaud@uncp.edu.
