Opt-in 2 Brave Alert

Opt-in 2 Brave Alert to receive emergency text messages.

What is it?

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to opt-in with their cell phone to receive emergency cell phone text notifications. In the event of a campus emergency at UNC Pembroke – weather, crime, fire or other dangerous situation – registrants will receive a text message detailing steps to remain safe. The system will only be used in critical situations with potential to affect health or safety.

How does it work?

Text messages are part of a broader emergency alert program called “BraveAlert” that UNCP installed in the wake of emergency issues that surfaced recently on other campuses. Siren, email, phone and other alerts will be used in combination with text messaging to alert the campus community.

For the text alert program, students, faculty and staff may sign-up at any time. BraveAlert will only send messages in the event of an emergency.

What is the frist step?

To sign-up, simply follow these easy and quick steps:

  1. Log-in to BraveWeb (link opens in a new window)
  2. Click on the link “Sign up for Emergency Text Messages”
  3. Click on the link “Add a Cell Phone Number”
  4. Enter your three-digit area code in the “Area Code” box
  5. Enter your seven-digit phone number in the “Phone Number” box using this format: “5215555” (Note: no dash)
  6. Click the “Submit” button

If you entered your phone number using the correct format, you will receive the message: “Number successfully inserted.” If you receive the message “Phone number too long,” please go back to step 4 and make certain you do not use a dash when entering your cell phone number.

Why should I opt-in?

During an emergency, this will be the most effective way for you to get up-to-the-minute information on where to go, where not to go, or what do to.

The system will not be used to distribute advertising or other unsolicited content. In the event of an active, major campus emergency, all UNC Pembroke personnel should also check their e-mail accounts, the University Web site, Brave Alert web site (www.uncpalert.com), and local media reports for other critical updates.

Enrollment is free, however, you may be charged a message fee by your service provider if you have a phone plan that does not cover text messaging; consult your carrier to confirm.

If you have your cell phone number entered into BraveWeb and do not wish to receive text messages alerting you of life threatening situations on campus, you may opt-out by texting "STOP UNCPalert" to 84469.

Again, only send "STOP UNCPalert" to 84469 to let us know that you DON'T want to receive emergency text messages. No other text message will allow you to opt-out of receiving BraveAlert text messages.

The emergency notification system is administered by University and Community Relations. To provide this service, the University has contracted with PIER Systems, a mass notification provider working with universities nationwide to support emergency communications plans.
