UNC Pembroke’s Office of Military & Veteran Services and the Literacy Commons invite you to join a veterans writers group. The first meeting is on Wednesday, October 9, from 2-3:30 p.m. in Suite G of Wellons Building.
The project is sponsored by the Literacy Commons, a campus group dedicated to all forms of literacy for all groups, said Dr. Scott Hicks, an English professor and co-founder of the project. Participants are invited to bring and share their work.
“In a welcoming, inspiring and supportive workshop environment, veteran Jim Stephenson will lead participants in a discussion of writing and sharing their work, with a goal of supporting one another toward publication.,” Dr. Hicks aid. “Jim is working to publish a history of his unit, and he looks forward to joining other veterans interested in expressing themselves through the written word.”
Stephenson served 26 years in the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Service. His primary field was Signals Intelligence and Electronic Warfare, retiring in 1984 as a command sergeants major. He is a Vietnam veteran and served in combat with the 5th Special Forces and the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division.
“I have written a book about the unit I began with at Fort Bragg in 1960, and with the help of Scott Hicks and some of you folks, I hope to finish it by the end of October,” Stephenson said. “It will be my pleasure to be a part of your group and talk with you.”
