Black History Month Activities

February is Black History Month. Activities planned at UNC Pembroke during the month include:

  • January 30 - The African Student Organization will sponsor the Miss African UNCP/African Student Organization Pageant at 7 p.m. in the Moore Hall Auditorium. Admission is free.
  • February 5 - As part of the 24th National African-American Read-in Literacy Campaign, "Speaking Our Words": Oral Recitations of African American Literature, will be held in the Recitation Room of the Mary Livermore Library at 6:30 p.m. UNCP students and special guests will recite favorite poems, passages and excerpts from African American literature.   • February 12 - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity will sponsor “Empowerment of Black Men” from 7-11 p.m. in the Chavis University Center Lounge. For more information, contact Lee Hammonds at lee.hammonds@uncp.edu.
  • February 12 - Vernon Wall, an African-American consultant, lecturer and author will present “Leading with style” at 6 p.m. in the Chavis University Center Lounge.   • February 13 - The NAACP presents Jeopardy Black History Style at 7 p.m. in the Chavis University Center lounge. Registration is at 6:30 p.m.
  • February 14 - Theatre Delta will present "Race Relations, Who Needs It?" at 6:30 p.m. in the Pine Residence Hall Multi-Purpose Room. For more information, contact Robert L. Canida, II at 910.521.6508 or oma@uncp.edu.
  • February 14 – The African-American Read-in Literacy Campaign will be held at RB Dean Elementary School in Maxton, NC at 8:30 a.m. For more information, contact Anne Coleman at anne.coleman@uncp.edu.
  • February 20 - The NAACP presents the first annual Mr. and Miss Black History at 8 p.m. in the University Center Annex. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $2. Sign-ups will be held January 30 - 31 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Chavis University Center mall.
  • February 22 and 23 – The Southeast Region Minority Student Symposium will be held at UNCP's Regional Center on Friday from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, contact Dr. Frankie Denise Powell at frankie.powell@uncp.edu.
  • February 27 – Dr. Christopher McKennan of UNC Chapel Hill will present "Tri-Racial Moviegoing," focusing on moviegoing in Robeson County during the Jim Crow era, when local theatres imposed three-way racial segregation among whites, American Indians and African America, at 6:30 p.m. in the University Center Annex.   • February 28 - The African Student Organization will sponsor a Cultural Art Show at 7 p.m. in the University Center Annex. For more information, contact Saffie Jallow at saj009@bravemail.uncp.edu.
