UNC Pembroke will host the annual Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, October 7.

James F. Buddy Bell, a 1958 graduate, will receive the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Curt Locklear, a 1975 graduate, will receive the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Jamie Goins was named Outstanding Young Alumna.

The UNCP Athletic Hall of Fame will add two names to its list of legends. Matt Lynch, an all-American wrestler and 1976 graduate, and the late English E. Jones, a former chancellor of the university, are the 74th and 75th members of the hall.

The awards ceremony begins at 5 p.m. in the University Center Annex, before the 8 p.m. start of Kool and the Gang’s performance in the Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC). The banquet takes place during homecoming week festivities, which wrap up on 2 p.m., Saturday when the Braves take to the gridiron against the Tusculum College Pioneers.

Dr. Locklear, who owns the Southeastern Veterinary Hospital in Lumberton, is a member of UNCP’s Chancellor’s Club and joined in the First and Ten Campaign to bring football back to UNCP. He regularly attends sporting events and performances at GPAC.

A retired educator, Buddy Bell is one of the most recognizable alumni on campus because he attends numerous athletic contests each year. He served as a fundraiser for the First and Ten Campaign Committee. As a student at UNCP he was captain of the basketball and baseball teams.

Jamie Goins earned a Master of Service Agency Counseling degree from UNCP. She has worked in youth development as a volunteer and as a professional since her youth. She is currently studying to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.

English Jones was president then chancellor of UNCP from 1962-79, a time of rapid growth in enrollment and building. He got funding to build the English E. Jones Health and Physical Education Building, which housed the Main and Auxilliary gyms, track and swimming pool along with classrooms. His tenure will be remembered as a golden age of athletics, which included the only national championship in Braves history.

Matt Lynch was named an all-American during the 1974-75 season, and he was all-district four years with 100 career victories. Following graduation, Lynch had a long coaching career in Lumberton and Fayetteville.
