UNCP’s Student Support Services program funded
A $1.4 million grant for UNC Pembroke’s Student Support Services program was awarded in early August by the U.S. Department of Education.
The funding is for five years and begins on September 1. It will serve 200 students per year.
Student Support Services is directed by Larry McCallum and provides additional academic and counseling support to low-income, disabled and first-generation college students.
“We were very pleased to hear that we can continue to provide important services to our participants,” McCallum said. “We believe we have a strong program and had a good grant application.
“This is an increasingly competitive process,” he said.
U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre, who represents Robeson County, announced the grant on August 11. Robeson Community College received a similar grant for $1.2 million.
“This is a great victory for Robeson County!” Rep. McIntyre said. “Congratulations to all the great folks at Robeson Community College and UNC Pembroke for their work in securing these federal dollars.”
The Office of Student Support Services, which has been funded continuously at UNCP since 1973, is designed to enrich student life academically, culturally and socially to ensure a supportive environment for students adjusting to college life, McCallum said.
“Our staff provides students who are accepted into the program with supportive services that include counseling, instruction, tutoring, career development and financial aid assistance,” he continued.
“We’re here to support our students and the University’s overall retention and graduation efforts,” McCallum said.
The office’s services include:
- Tutoring, one-on-one or in groups
- Study skills assistance
- Academic Advisement
- Personal or social counseling
- Career development
- Assistance in applying for financial aid
- Support services for students with disabilities
- Access to reference and resource materials
Students who do not qualify for services from Student Support Services may receive assistance from UNCP’s Office for Academic Excellence.
