UNCP is a national leader in American Indian graduates
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke continues to be a national leader for producing American Indian graduates in 2008-09, according to the June edition of Diverse magazine.
UNCP continues to rank number one in the U.S. for physical sciences graduates.
The University is number two in health professions and number three for biological sciences graduates and number three in social sciences graduates.
Health professions, new to Diverse magazine ratings in 2007-08, surged in number of graduates for 2008-09 at UNCP. With 27 graduates, UNCP showed a 50 percent increase.
UNCP ranked 10th overall among all U.S. colleges and universities with 136 American Indian graduates in 2008-09. That number represented 18 percent of all graduates and is three percent higher than the previous year.
UNCP led all Eastern U.S. higher education institutions.
The University annually ranks very high nationally for producing American Indian biological and biomedical science graduates. For 2008-09, UNCP ranked 3rd nationally.
Diverse magazine delivers an annual report titled “Top 100 Minority Undergraduate Degree Producers.” It charted African American, Hispanic and American Indian grads in several degree areas.
UNCP also ranked high for American Indian graduates in:
- Physical Sciences (chemistry & physics) – UNCP ranked 1st nationally
- Biological & Biomedical Sciences – ranked 3rd
- Health Professions and Related Clinical Sciences – ranked 2nd
- Social Sciences & History – ranked 3rd, up from 6th last year
- Education – ranked 8th with 94 graduates
- Ethnic & Cultural Studies – ranked 11th
- Business – ranked 21st nationally, up 57.1 percent and up from 40th place last year
UNCP was founded in 1887 to train American Indian school teachers and blossomed into a four-year degree granting university in 1939 and a master’s granting institution in 1978.
The University offers 41 undergraduate majors and 17 master’s degrees, including the Master of Business, Public Administration and Social Work degrees.
