UNCP has record blood drive on September 23
UNC Pembroke’s first Red Cross blood drive of the school year on September 23 was a big one with 183 units collected.
Sponsored by Student Health Services and the wrestling team, who also took donations during the day, the drive set a record for a one-day collection in Robeson County, according to Erica Rosenberg, American Red Cross donor recruitment representative.
“Thank you so much for allowing us to come on campus and collect,” Rosenberg said. “The wrestling team did an amazing job recruiting donors as well as raising money for the local Red Cross Chapter.”
The drive surpassed the goal of 165 units. Each unit of blood has the potential to save the lives of three people, the Red Cross says.
The success caught the attention of Chancellor Charles Jenkins, who thanked donors, the wrestling team, coach Jamie Gibbs and former coach P.J. Smith, a long-time Red Cross volunteer and board member.
“The entire UNC Pembroke family congratulates you on this great achievement,” Dr. Jenkins said. “Many thanks to students, faculty and staff for their strong support of the campus blood drive.”
