National Survey of Student Engagement report
Students gave very high marks to UNC Pembroke as a “supportive campus environment,” in the 2008 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
A very high percent of first-year students had a favorable image of the school and believe UNCP is committed to their academic success. Among seniors, nearly nine of 10 said they would choose UNCP again if they could start their college career over.
More than eight of 10 students surveyed said the University places “substantial emphasis on academics.”
Released in September, the report surveyed 322 first-year and senior students at UNCP. The survey scored on a 1-100 scale and measured responses against the institution’s peers and against all schools surveyed in 2008.
The NSSE has been used by more than 1,300 colleges and universities, and nearly half a million students were surveyed in 2008. The results for UNCP compare favorably with those from the other institutions who participated in NSSE 2008—a total of 769.
Seniors rated UNCP higher than seniors at other NSSE institutions across a broad array of critical educational indicators including:
- Learning something that changed the way they understand the world;
- Learning work-related knowledge and skills;
- Learning to write clearly and effectively;
- Learning to think critically and analytically;
- Believing the University helped them develop a personal code of values and ethics;
- Believing the University contributes positively to community welfare; and
- Believing the University helped them understand people of other racial and ethnic backgrounds.
NSSE results also are reported by way of five calculated scores representing benchmarks of effective educational practices: Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. In comparison to surveyed students at all NSSE 2008 institutions, first-year and senior UNCP students scored significantly higher on Student-Faculty Interaction (the level and nature of student contact and interaction with faculty—discussing ideas, getting prompt feedback, and working together on research activities). Seniors also ranked more highly on Active/Collaborative Learning and Supportive Campus Environment.
