‘Active Shooter’ exercise readied for October 10

In its continuing effort to improve campus safety, the University will stage a simulated crisis and response exercise at O.R. Sampson Academic Building from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, October 10.

Sampson Hall and several staging areas will be cordoned off to the public and campus community during that time. University entrances will also be manned by law enforcement personnel to serve as “check points.” It is important for all persons on campus Friday, October 10, to have their UNCP I.D.s with them at all times.

The event was scheduled during Fall Break to reduce inconvenience and/or confusion, University officials said.

Campus Police and Public Safety and the Division of University and Community Relations (UCR) will coordinate the event, and several law enforcement and public safety agencies will also be involved.

EnviroSafe, a consulting company from Graham, N.C., will provide specialized services and solutions to assist in UNCP’s preparedness, emergency response and regulatory compliance programs.

University officials are asking the faculty, staff and students to communicate the event to their constituents. In particular, agencies with constituents that may be on campus during this time – such as Student and Residence Life, Athletics and International Programs – should be especially aware of the active shooter exercise.

“We would like to make every person, especially those associated with the University, aware of this event’s date and the purpose for it,” said Dr. Glen Burnette Jr., vice chancellor for the Division of University and Community Relations. “The safety of our campus community is of paramount importance to all of us, and this event is an outstanding way to test our readiness.”

It is the second simulation for the University. A pandemic “tabletop” exercise was successfully completed during the spring semester. The exercises are recommended for all campuses by UNC General Administration.

The active shooter exercise will simulate a situation of an armed intruder on campus and tests the responses of the University and surrounding law enforcement agencies. Voice, email and text messaging emergency systems will be used.
