UNCP’s School of Business holds annual Banquet
Southeastern Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Chief Executive Officer Joanne Anderson told an audience of business students gathered April 17 at UNC Pembroke’s annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet “how did she got that job.”

It wasn’t the usual CEO success story, as the soft-spoken Anderson advised those who would climb the business ladder to “remember your roots,” “be true to yourself” and “always remember to thank the people who got you where you are.”
A first generation college graduate who started her career as a floor nurse, Anderson grew up in a small eastern Kentucky town where health care consisted of two nurse practioners. SRMC’s CEO recalled the people who influenced her as a youth, including her father who had an 8th grade education.
“My father told me ‘a lot of what you are is what you started with,’” Anderson said. “‘Be yourself,’ he said, but ‘let others be themselves too.’”
“My math teacher in high school asked us what we planned to do with our future,” she said. “He told us to use our minds as you go forward and to help as many people as possible.”
A college professor reinforced the nurses’ creed that the patient comes first.
“‘If you’re going to be a nurse, you’ll have the lives of patients in your hands,’ he advised me, and it is your responsibility to use your talents appropriately.’S”
