Student Health Services win state service award
UNC Pembroke’s Student Health Services (SHS) won an award recently for Distinguished Community Service in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
SHS Director Cora Bullard, B.S.N., received the award during the 2007 World AIDS Day Volunteer Service Awards Banquet in Durham, N.C., on November 29. Bullard also served as mistress of ceremonies at the banquet, which was sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Public Health.
“Our department has worked very hard to educate students and the entire campus on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases,” Bullard said. “This fall we performed more than 200 HIV/STD screenings for students.
“I was in nursing school when the first case of HIV/AIDS was reported in North Carolina,” she said. “It continues to be a major health concern globally and right here.”
UNCP’s SHS successfully applied for an HIV/AIDS prevention grant titled Commit to Prevent from the state Department of Health and Human Services in 2003, and grant money totaling $59,625 continues to be used to empower University students to change behaviors that put them at risk for HIV and STDs.
Numerous health fairs, risk reduction programs, counseling, tests and screenings have been part of UNCP’s prevention program. UNCP’s program received assistance from the Robeson County Health Department and the Healing Lodge, a non-profit health organization in Pembroke.
“Strengthening linkages between institutions and other HIV/STD prevention providers near campus, particularly those providing counseling and testing, has been important to the success of our program,” Bullard said.
“It was a great honor to win this award,” she said. “It was also a surprise, a pleasant surprise.”
