UNCP ranks high nationally for American Indian grads
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke ranked among the nation’s leading colleges and universities for granting undergraduate degrees to American Indians.
UNCP ranks 8th nationally for all undergraduate degrees earned by American Indians with 135 in 2005-06.
With an enrollment of approximately 6,000, UNCP is the only university in the eastern U.S. in the top 50 overall on a list compiled by Diverse magazine for its May 31, 2007 issue.
UNCP ranked high nationally in many academic disciplines for producing American Indian graduates:
- No.1 for students majoring in biological and biomedical sciences
- No.1 in physical sciences
- No.2 in social sciences
- No.9 in computer and information technology
- No.10 in English
- No.11 for graduates in business majors
- No.11 in health professions
- No.14 in education majors
- No.37 in psychology
Diversity magazine compiles the rankings annually for institutions of higher education for all minority groups earning undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The list places UNC Pembroke among the premier degree granting institutions for Native Americans in the nation, Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said.
“We are extremely proud that a significant number of American Indians continue to select UNCP when they have so many options,” Chancellor Meadors said. “It speaks volumes about their appreciation that UNCP has and always will be there for them.
“We celebrate the University’s rich cultural diversity and believe the cultural interaction on campus better prepares students to compete in a global society,” Chancellor Meadors added.
In the U.S. News & World Report publication, “Best American Colleges 2008,” that was released August 17, UNCP also ranked number one among Southern “Master’s” universities in diversity.
