GPAC’s Patricia Fields wins NCAHEAD award
The North Carolina Association on Higher Education and Disability (NCAHEAD) named Patricia Fields, director of UNC Pembroke’s Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC), winner of its Laura Thomas Award.
The award is given annually to an outstanding individual outside the field
of disability services who has demonstrated exemplary support and advocacy
for students with disabilities.
The award was announced at NCAHEAD’s fall conference on October 12-13 in Raleigh. N.C. The association selects an outstanding individual annually for its Laura Thomas Award. Thomas was the director of Disability Services at Appalachian State University for many years.
Fields was honored for her work on accessibility in GPAC, innovative programming as demonstrated by the annual Very Special Arts Festival and support for the Disabled Student Organization.
“All of us at UNCP know how special Patricia Fields is, so it was a real honor for Disability Support Services (DSS) staff to nominate her and have the entire state recognize how lucky UNCP is to have someone like her working here,” said Mary Helen Walker, DSS director. “The students with disabilities find her supportive. Without her, they would not have met many of the famous people with disabilities who are living with their disabilities and maintaining very successful lifestyles.”
