Jorgiana Martin is named Miss UNCP 2006
Jorgiana Martin, a junior science education major from Fayetteville, N.C., was named Miss UNCP 2006 at the scholarship pageant on January 26 at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Morgan Hunt, Miss UNCP 2005, places the crown on Jorgiana Martin,
the new Miss UNCP.
Approximately 1,000 in the Givens Performing Arts Center cheered five contestants in five stages of competition, including swimsuit, eveningwear, casual wear, talent and question-and-answer session.
Martin, who is a Teaching Fellow, performed a tap dance to the Jerry Lee Lewis song, “Great Balls of Fire.” She scored points answering a question about her platform, “Promoting Literacy in Youth.”
“The most important factor in promoting literacy among youth is parental involvement,” Martin said. “Twenty-seven percent of adults in Robeson County are either illiterate or functionally illiterate, so children are not being read to. We must promote literacy among parents first.”
Miss UNCP won a $1,000 scholarship and a $1,000 wardrobe allowance to compete for the Miss North Carolina title. After posing for photographs, Martin said she was very excited to represent UNCP.
“I’m very surprised,” she said. “My legs are still shaking.”
First Runner-up and recipient of a $500 scholarship was Anna-Alicia Leggett, a sophomore from Fayetteville, N.C. Second Runner-up and winner of a $300 scholarship was Felicia Mangum, a sophomore from Wendell, N.C.
Mangum was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. Martin was named winner of the Jessica Reed Family Award for Community Service.
Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening was Brooke McLaurin, reigning Miss North Carolina. She put the title in perspective.
“Miss UNCP is a role model and leader on campus,” McLaurin said. “She represents all women of the University.”
McLaurin and Miss UNCP 2005 Morgan Hunt entertained the audience with vocal performances. Hunt was a popular and busy Miss UNCP, earning a top 10 spot at the Miss North Carolina Pageant and winning the swimsuit competition.
Before her “Final Walk,” Hunt offered comments on her year-long reign.
“I never imagined when I was crowned Miss UNCP that it would be such a wonderful year,” she said. “When I started the ‘Our Community Supports Our Community’ program, you guys stood behind me all the way.”
Hunt staged the first UNCP Diabetes Awareness Day and brought former Miss America and diabetic Nicole Johnson Baker to campus. She also raised funds for the American Diabetes Association and local diabetes programs.
Executive Director for the pageant Dr. Diane Jones, who is vice chancellor for Student Affairs, said Morgan Hunt has been a wonderful ambassador for UNC Pembroke.
“Morgan has carried the name of UNCP proudly across the state,” Dr. Jones said. “She exemplifies all the characteristics of a positive role model for our student body.
“I am equally excited and look forward to working with our new Miss UNCP, Jorgiana Martin, as she assumes her role as ambassador for Miss UNCP,” she said. “She exhibits a presence of poise, grace and sophistication. She is a Dean’s List student and a Teaching Fellow Scholar and exhibits high academic standards, which will serve her well as she juggles the rigorous schedule before her. I look forward to working with Jorgiana as she assumes her role as Miss UNCP and prepares for the Miss North Carolina Pageant in June!”
Three young ladies served as youth representatives to the pageant. They were Miss UNCP Princesses Taylor Smith and Erika Locklear and Miss Outstanding Teen Jocelyn Hunt.
Director of the pageant was Miss North Carolina 2000, Lorna McNeill Ricotta, who is director of corporate and foundation relations for UNCP. Pageant Coordinator was Dr. Lisa Schaeffer, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. Zavery McDougald provided choreography.
