University confers professor emeritus status on three
Upon recommendation of the Faculty Senate, the Board of Trustees of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke conferred professor emeriti status on Dr. Manuel Conley, Dr. Harold David Maxwell, and Ralph Steeds on April 28.
Dr. Charles Harrington, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, said that emeritus status is for exemplary service.
“These three faculty have distinguished themselves in the classroom, the laboratory, the world’s art galleries, and in the community,” Dr. Harrington said. “Their service to the University has been exemplary and each serve as a role model for our faculty. It is fitting that the Board of Trustees has recognized these fine individuals for their selfless and tireless efforts on behalf of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke by bestowing upon them emeritus status.”
Dr. Manuel Conley joined the faculty in 1995 in the History Department.
Dr. Conley received his doctorate from Middle Tennessee State University
as well as a bachelor’s degree in American Indian Studies from UNCP.
During his tenure, Dr. Conley served on the Student Development Services
Committee for the re-accreditation process by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools. He also served the History Department as faculty advisor
to the Alpha Delta Xi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta for many years. He spent
10 years as the advisor for the local chapter of the National History Honor
Society. Dr. Conley was an active scholar as well, having published over
10 articles and several book reviews.
Dr. Harold Maxwell joined the faculty in 1967 in the Biology Department
and served the University until 2002 when he joined the phased retirement
program. Dr. Maxwell received his doctorate from N.C. State. In 1988, he
won the Outstanding University Professor Award from the University, and in
1990, he received the award for outstanding instruction in the natural sciences
and mathematics division. Dr. Maxwell was department chair for 12 years and
the director for the MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers) program for
15 years. In this program, he also secured a biomedical research and training
grant from the National Institutes of Health.
Professor Ralph Steeds has been a faculty member in the Art Department
since 1975. Steeds was the first recipient of the Adolph L. Dial Award for
Scholarship and Creative Work in 1992. A productive lithographer, he has
artwork on display in over 15 major institutions and was included in over
160 regional, national and international exhibitions. Steeds served as the
director of the Art Department Gallery for 25 years and helped produce approximately
175 exhibitions of local and national artists. He had a print accepted into
the prestigious international exhibit 12th Space International Print Biennial
that was held at the Sungkok Museum of Art, Seoul, South Korea. Fewer than
10 prints from North America were chosen to be in this exhibition. Steeds
developed and taught an upper-division art history course on North American
Indian Art. He collected over 2,000 visual images based on Native American
studies.
