UNCP’s School of Business gives awards, scholarships
Lee Nejberger and Sarah Parker were named 2006 Outstanding Undergraduate Students at the annual School of Business Awards and Scholarship Banquet on April 19 at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. View photos of recipients.
Tom Jackson was named Outstanding Graduate Student, and the Outstanding Faculty Award went to Dr. Ramin Maysami.
Candidates for Outstanding Undergraduate Student must be nominated by faculty, maintain a 3.5 GPA in their major, and write an essay. A senior who will graduate with summa cum laude (3.85 GPA or higher), Nejberger of Lawndale, N.C., is a member of the Golf Team and a member of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise). A senior cum laude (3.4 GPA or higher) graduate from Laurinburg, N.C., Parker is secretary of SIFE, the school’s largest club with 52 members.
Jackson is executive director of UNCP’s University Computing and Information Services. He credited the MBA program with teaching an IT professional to “understand the world view of people in the business world and to communicate in the language of business.”
School of Business Dean Dr. Eric Dent announced the Facultyship Award. In his third year on the business faculty, Dr. Mayasmi is a member of several important University committees, including the Honors Council. During 2005-06, he co-authored two published papers with students and collaborated with five colleagues on papers.
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors offered greetings and challenged the University’s top business students to “grasp globalization” and to “work hard at something that you love to do.”
Keynote speaker for the evening was H. Thomas Jones II, CEO of Southeastern Utilities Development, Inc., and a former UNCP trustee. He encouraged students to learn the power of setting goals.
“A goal is a dream with a deadline,” Jones said. “You need the courage to set goals - never be afraid to set ambitious goals, and never be afraid of not achieving them.”
“You should review your goals daily and work toward accomplishing them,” he said. “Goals give focus to your life and a solid foundations to your dreams.”
Jones is a 1972 UNCP graduate. Southeastern Utilities Development is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lumbee River Electric Membership Corp. that identifies and develops non-utility related revenue.
- The BB&T Scholarship was awarded to Kim Kang, an international student from Korea.
- The Independent Insurance Agents of N.C. Scholarships went to Christopher Abbott of Kittrell, N.C., McKenzie Hicks of Raeford, N.C., and Anna Lassiter. The scholarships were awarded by Dick Taylor, a Lumberton insurance agent and UNCP trustee.
- Ron Emanuel of Maxton, N.C., and Cheryl Joseph of Laurinburg, N.C., won awards for their work with the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. They successfully prepared 65 state and federal income tax returns.
- The Jackie Parker Adams Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Vanessa Pettigrew of Fayetteville, N.C. Leroy Adams, husband of the late Jackie Adams, awarded the scholarship that honors a 1980 UNCP graduate who was the first female CPA in Robeson County.
