Robert Cooper joins the Office of Student Activities
Robert N. Cooper joined The University of North Carolina at Pembroke in May as associate director for the Office of Student Activities.
At UNCP, Cooper coordinates a variety of student activities and advises
student organizations, including fraternities and sororities.
A veteran of student affairs work in higher education, Cooper brought broad experience to the position. He reports to Abdul Ghaffar, director of student activities.
“We feel fortunate to have been able to hire Robert,” Ghaffar
said. “He has excellent experience in many aspects of student affairs.
He also has great enthusiasm and passion for working with students. He will
be a great fit for our office and for UNCP.”
A Richmond, Va., native, Cooper worked in student affairs administration at
colleges in Virginia and Kentucky before coming to Pembroke.
At Roanoke College, he served as assistant director of student activities, resident administrator, programming coordinator, assistant men’s and women’s track coach and game room manager. At Union College, Cooper was director of student activities and taught freshman seminar.
“These are small colleges, so I did everything,” he said. “It was a valuable experience that prepared me to move into a larger university setting.”
Cooper’s involvement in campus organizations goes back to his undergraduate days at Lynchburg College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in child development and a Master’s degree in educational leadership.
“I enjoyed college so much that I never left,” Cooper said. “I really enjoy the role of educating and fostering the maturation of young people.”
Just two weeks on the job, Cooper said he likes what he sees at UNCP.
“I am enjoying it here,” he said. “The staff and students are really excited about what they do, and I hope to help them make a difference on campus.”
The Office of Student Activities is responsible for coordinating student organizations, student government, community and university service, entertainment, Distinguished Speaker Series and parents weekend.
