U.S. News report:
UNCP scores high in two new ‘Best Colleges’ categories
UNC Pembroke ranks high in two new categories,
including “highest proportion of classes under 20” and “most
international students,” according to the latest edition of the
nation’s leading college rating guide.
As it did last year, U.S. News & World Report’s publication of “America’s Best Colleges, 2005 Edition” gave UNCP very high marks for campus diversity and the low amount of debt for graduates.
The U.S. News annual publication just hit newsstands, and UNC Pembroke is “The Future of College,” according to a feature article about diversity at the University.
The feature article, on pages 48-50, states that when it comes to student diversity, “few colleges match UNC Pembroke,” and “Pembroke in some ways represents the future of higher education.”
The September publication of “America’s Best Colleges 2005” is good news for a growing university like UNCP, said Chancellor Allen C. Meadors.
“It is a privilege to be recognized in ‘America’s Best Colleges,’ a respected national guide,” Chancellor Meadors said. “The high rankings we received are indicative of our commitment to become the premier regional university in the nation. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing our students the best education.”
Here’s how UNCP fared:
In the campus diversity rating system employed by U.S. News, UNCP scored a 0.63, second only to Barry University of Miami, Fla,, which posted a 0.66.
At UNCP, white, African American and American Indian student groups each comprise more than 20 percent of the student population.
There is a growing presence of Asian and Hispanic students too, Chancellor Meadors said. About four percent of students at UNCP are Hispanic or Asian.
“This campus is already what we say we want society to be,” Chancellor Meadors is quoted saying in the U.S. News feature.
