UNCP to make
offer to buy 4.3 acres
The UNC Pembroke
Board of Trustees authorized an offer to buy 4.3 acres of land. The
vote was taken at a special meeting held Friday, January 16.
The parcel will
cost $26,000 and is located on University Drive. It does not adjoin
current UNCP property, but the University has its eye on other property
in the area.
"We need to
buy every piece of land we can around the University," board Chair
Gervais Oxendine said.
"Especially
on the north side," Trustee Dick Taylor added.
The land consists
of two parcels and is owned by heirs of the Lowry family.
The board also approved
Boney architects of Wilmington to create a master plan for UNCP. The
plan would show what the University would look like in five years with
6-8,000 students enrolled.
"The University
was at 3,000 enrollment with no one predicting more than 4,200,"
Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said. "We are looking at 6-8,000, and
we need to know what the campus would look like."
The last master
plan was created five years ago. The new master plan will show new buildings,
land, landscaping, sidewalks, lighting, security and signage.
