Braves capture first PBC tournament championship
Host NCAA Division II Southeast Soccer Regional Tournament on Saturday, November 13 at 7 p.m.
UNC Pembroke won its first-ever
Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tournament championship November 6, defeating
USC Upstate 3-1
at the Irwin Belk Athletic Complex.
UNCP used two goals in a 28-second span at the start of the final period to take a lead and never looked back. The Braves also won the regular season championship.
USC Upstate struck first in the 35th minute when Liam Slack beat Brave keeper Richard Sallin on a one-on-one. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The Braves came out with a tremendous amount of energy at the start of the final period. At 49:06, UNCP got on the board when Sascha Gorres crossed a ball perfectly to a breaking Ozgur Baytar to tie the game at 1-1.
Just 28 seconds later, Upstate keeper Jordan Wanner made a tremendous save on a Gorres shot, but Trond Myrland booted home the rebound to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. UNCP's Mircea Cosac added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute on a Jan Broszeit assist.
UNCP dominated most of the game, out-shooting the Spartans 14-7. Wanner finished with five saves, while Sallin notched only one on the day.
Four Braves were named to the 2004 PBC All-Tournament Team: Ozgur Baytar, Sascha Gorres, Joe Warenda and Trond Myrland, who was named most valuable player.
Before Friday’s semi-final contest, Mike Schaeffer was named PBC coach of the year. It was his third coach of the year award.
A record five UNC Pembroke Braves earned all-conference honors: Graeme Little, Sascha Gorres, Trond Myrland, Thomas Lindal, and Sinan Tumkaya. Little and Gorres are now two-time recipients.
