A delegation from
UNC Pembroke traveled this winter to Peru to sign student exchange agreements
with the University of Piura (UDEP). UNCP also opened discussions with
the University of Femenina del Sagrado Corazón (UNIFE).
This was UNCP's
first foray into South America. In its effort to "internationalize"
its campus, UNCP has signed student and faculty exchange agreements
with universities in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America (Mexico).
Representing UNCP
were Dr. Roger Brown, Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs,
Dr. Carolyn Thompson, Honors College Director, and Dr. Liliana Wendorff,
Coordinator of the Spanish language major.
Dr. Brown signed
two agreements with Universidad de Piura (UDEP). One agreement is for
UNCP students to study Spanish and Peruvian culture, and the other is
a student exchange agreement.
"Peru is home
to some of the world's most ancient and honored cultures," Dr.
Brown said. "Partnerships between UNCP and these two institutions
would provide a wonderful opportunity for our students, faculty and
staff to better understand our neighbors in the Western Hemisphere.
I hope someday to return to Peru to visit our students studying there."
UNCP offered a major
in Spanish in fall semester of 2003. The University is seeking to develop
more study abroad opportunities in Latin America so that students may
be exposed to culture as well as language.

and graduate degrees, including business, education, engineering, economics,
law and languages.
Dr. Brown and UDEP
Rector Antonio Abruña Puyol signed formal agreements.
The contingent also
visited Universidad Femenina del Sagrado Corazon (UNIFE) in Lima to
explore the possibility of negotiating a student exchange program. UNCP
officials met with Dr. Elga García Aste, Rector, Dr. Agustín
Campos, Dean of School of Education, Dr. Gloria Benavides, Director
of Post-Graduate Studies and Dr. Rosa María Reusche, Academic
Vice-Chancellor.
Located in the capital
city of Lima, UNIFE is known as "the university of women."
In 1962, the Nuns of the Sacred Heart founded the university as a place
for women to receive professional training.
UNIFE offers undergraduate
degree programs in psychology, law, education, architecture, journalism,
public relations, nutrition, languages and engineering. UNIFE offers
Master's degree programs in education, psychology and law and Doctorate
degrees in education and psychology.
