Library computer network goes wireless

UNC Pembroke's Sampson-Livermore Library is checking out more than books these days.

The library upgraded four laptop computers with wireless network cards that may access the University's network anywhere inside the building. Students and faculty may check out the computers that will enable them to access the Internet, library resources and a variety of software from UNCP's network.

The wireless system is functioning well in all corners of the library, said Systems Librarian Cindy Saylor.

"This new service is a result of the expanding need for access to information and software without the constraints of being in a particular location in the library," Saylor said. "It's a test program that, if successful, would result in the acquisition of 20 new wireless laptops next fall."

The library is the first building on UNCP's campus to advertise wireless technology for computing. Computer users may also access the campus network with their own wireless PCs, and plans are in place to install wireless technology in other areas of campus, said Maurice Mitchell, Associate Vice Chancellor, and Chief Information Officer at UNCP.

"We have deployed wireless technology at the University Center and in meeting rooms at Lumbee Hall," Mitchell said. "Our plan is to install it in classrooms and faculty office areas next."

In the future, computer users will be able to access UNCP's network outdoors. To access the system, a wireless network card and a University account are needed, Mitchell said.

In the library, laptops may be checked out at the Circulation Desk after signing an agreement. The laptops are loaned in two-hour increments that are renewable, if availability allows. The laptops must stay in the library, and there is a fee for late returns.
