UNCP poster contest was a winner

Jennifer Hogan, a senior art major, won the Disability Support Services (DSS) poster contest at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Her inspiration came from research, Hogan said.

"In class, Professor (Margie) Labadie sent us out to do research, and I went to DSS and picked up some brochures," she said. "I wanted to encompass all disabilities, not just one, so I focused on ability instead of disability."

Hogan's poster depicts a magnifying glass that enlarges the ability from the word disability. She was pleased with the results.

"It's a good portfolio piece for me," she said.

Ultimately, the poster will be used as part of an advertising campaign for DSS in the 2004 fall semester. The campaign will feature a slogan, such as "Illuminate Your Ability," "Focus on Your Abilities' or "disABILITIES."

And for Disability Support Services, Hogan's work makes a positive statement, said contest facilitator Jennifer Lowry, assistant director for DSS.

"Jennifer's poster fits perfectly with our mission," Lowry said. "Our goal was to make people think about disabilities in a positive way, and this is it."

The office, which serves about 600 students with a variety of disabilities, will use the winning entry on posters, letterhead, websites and brochures. There were 27 entries, many from UNCP's Art Department. Art Professor Margie Labadie served as a consultant on the project.

Winning honorable mention in the contest were Justin Matthews, Heather Stanley and Wendell Campbell.
