University crowns
a new Miss UNCP
 Meet
the new Miss UNCP 2003, Robyn Baker.
Crowned on November
20, 2003, Baker is a 19-year-old sophomore Music Education major from
Northfield, N.J. She is a 5-foot 4-inches with blonde hair and lists
singing, piano and physical fitness as her hobbies.
At UNCP, Baker is
a member of the University Choir, Pembroke Singers and played a lead
role in the Musical Theatre Program's first stage production. She was
awarded the Richard C. Pisano Scholarship for her contributions to the
Music Department. Baker also won the annual Concerto Competition.
In high school,
she was a member of the National Honor Society, winner of the School
Spirit Award, a member of the All South Jersey Choir and won numerous
other awards for music and leadership.
The new Miss UNCP
has been busy. She was a guest at the grand opening of the new Pembroke
Municipal Building on November 12, and attended the Miss Kinston-Lenoir
Pageant on November 22. She was Mistress of Ceremonies for the campus-wide
Holiday Social on December 3, and she was a judge for the Peterson Elementary
School Pageant in Red Springs on December 4.
At the crowning
ceremony, Dr. Diane Jones, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, offered
greetings on behalf of the University.
"Congratulations
Robyn, Miss UNCP 2003," Dr. Jones. "Miss UNC Pembroke has
to be well spoken. She has to be concerned with the issues facing our
nation today. Miss UNCP must be a well-rounded individual. She must
be socially conscientious, dynamic, interested in higher education,
and physically fit."
"We know that
Robyn will reign with pride and represent this University with poise
and dignity," she said.
Baker said she is
thrilled at the opportunity to represent the University.
"I love it,"
she said. "I just want to thank my Mother and Dad, my sister Julie
and Steve and all my great friends at UNCP for their encouragement to
enter the pageant."
Baker did not wait
to be asked how a New Jersey high school student found her way to North
Carolina.
"That's the
first question everybody asks me," she said. "It's the weather!"
Baker said that
during Spring Break, she left 30-degree weather behind in New Jersey
for her visit to Pembroke, where the weather was sunny and 70 degrees.
Besides the weather
Baker has discovered sweet tea, hush puppies and a lot of friends.
"I'm glad I
came here," she said. "I did not know one person here when
I arrived, and I met the best friends I'll ever have."
Baker, who wants
a career as a performer, said UNCP's Music Department has been great.
"The Music
Department is a lot of fun," she said. "I have an awesome
vocal instructor in Christine Weidinger."
The department has
instilled an appreciation for higher education in the sophomore.
"Eventually,
I want to teach, either at the high school or college level," Baker
said. "I would like to get a master's degree and a doctorate too."
Besides writing
music and working on a CD, Baker will be busy tuning up for her farewell
performance on January 29, 2004.
"I can't wait,"
she said. "I promise that my final performance as Miss UNCP will
be a memorable one."
