UNCP opens talks with South Korean university

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is expanding its international web of partnerships into the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Sung-Kyung Kim, President of Woosong University, visited UNCP August 14-15 to discuss several mutually beneficial projects.

Dr. Kim and Woosong International Programs Director, Dr. Seunghun Yu, met with Chancellor Allen C. Meadors, Dr. Roger Brown, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Alex Chen, Director of UNCP International Programs, and several key administrators.

Woosong University's President discussed the establishment of formal exchange agreements in undergraduate and graduate business programs, as well as the English as a Second Language program. He had kind words for UNCP.

"I feel that UNCP is a very aggressive institution and is trying many innovative things to become a stronger university," Dr. Kim said. "I see a great deal of effort by the Chancellor, the Provost, administrators and faculty."

"Your Chancellor and Provost have done a great job in taking this university to the next level," he said. "We are not only interested in the exchange of business programs. We are trying to internationalize our university in all fields."

Chancellor Meadors thanked Dr. Kim for his kind words and said the timing is good to develop a high quality academic relationship with this new international partner.

"Woosong University and UNCP are seeking many of the same opportunities for their students and faculty," Chancellor Meadors said. "The timing for collaborative programs between our two universities appears to be right. We look forward to the development of some quality programs with Woosong Univeristy."

Dr. Kim said Woosong University has established exchange agreements in Information Technology programs with China, New Zealand, Thailand, England and Vietnam, and they are working to forge ties to Japanese and U.S. universities. Several other prominent U.S. universities were on Dr. Kim's itinerary.

"Woosong University believes that in order to be on the frontline of globalization, international relations must be nurtured and maintained. Our university is affiliated with more than 20 sister universities in the world," Dr. Kim stated in an open letter on the University's web site.

Woosong University was founded in 1995 as a force for educational innovation in South Korea. It has a current enrollment of 5,487, including 433 students studying abroad.
