The Board of Directors
of the Friends of the Sampson-Livermore Library
at UNC Pembroke voted December 2 to fund six Friends of the Library
Scholarships in the amount of $7,000.
The Friends contributed
a $5,000 endowed scholarship, a $1,000 non-endowed scholarship and four
$250 book scholarships, that will be awarded in the spring of 2005.
Chancellor Allen
C. Meadors was on hand for the board's announcement. "The dedication
and commitment of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Sampson-Livermore
Library is evident in their decision to fund six scholarships,"
Chancellor Meadors said. "Students for generations to come will
benefit from the Board's generosity."
The endowed scholarship
will go to a University Honors College student. The $1,000 non-endowed
scholarship will go to a full-time undergraduate student, said University
Librarian Elinor Foster.
"The Friends
of the Library of UNCP are pleased to be able to support the studies
of several students with these scholarships," Dr. Foster said.
"As our annual benefit events continue, we hope to increase the
amount of support for the endowed scholarship.
"The Friends
of the Library appreciate all who have supported our benefit event,
held each April," she said. "Thanks to our supporters and
a concerned Board of Directors, we're doing our part to contribute to
the development of an information literate society."
The book scholarships
may go to graduate or undergraduate students, full or part-time. All
scholarships require a GPA of 3.0 or better and a statement of financial
need.
The scholarships
are funded with proceeds from the annual benefit events held in the
spring, which began in 2002.
The spring 2004
benefit is scheduled for the evening of April 23, 2004. The tentative
title for the event is "Books, Barbecue, and Bluegrass." D.
G. Martin, host of UNC-TV's weekly book program, will be the speaker
and the Stephenson Family will provide music.
Officers of the
Friends of the Library include: Immediate Past President, Dr. Ray Rundus;
President, Dr. Bruce Ezell; Vice President and President-elect Helen
Pate; Secretary Nickie Blanton; Treasurer Susan Whitt and Executive
Secretary, Dr. Elinor Foster.
