A large delegation
from North China Institute of Science and Technology visited UNC Pembroke
in late September.
The group, headed
by President and Director Gengyu Yang, spent three days at UNCP discussing
exchange programs for students and professors.
"We are particularly
interested in the Master's of Public Management Program," said
Dr. Yang. "Because America is a developed country and China is
a developing country, we hope to learn advanced administration of business
and public management."
The Chinese university
is also seeking to import certificate programs in information technology,
particularly in the area of e-commerce, which UNCP plans to offer in
partnership with Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, N.C.
UNCP, which launched
its Master's of Public Management program at the Chinese University
of Mining and Technology in Xuzhou earlier this fall, is seeking additional
partners abroad. President Yang is an old friend.
"Chancellor
(Allen C.) Meadors is our old friend going back to 1997," President
Yang said. "And Provost (Roger) Brown was a recent visitor to our
university."
Chancellor Meadors
said he is looking forward to a productive exchange.
"Relationships
like this one can be very productive for both of our schools,"
Chancellor Meadors said. "The exchange of ideas and cultures with
the North China Institute will strengthen our mission of globalizing
this university."
"We welcome
our friends from China and wish them a very productive stay in the U.S.,"
he said.
A state-supported
school, North China Institute of Science and Technology is located a
short drive from Tiananmen Square in the Chinese capitol of Beijing.
The institute was founded in 1984 and has grown very quickly to an enrollment
of 9,000 with 650 professors on its faculty.
North China Institute
offers bachelor and associate degrees in business management, computer
science, English and engineering. It also offers certificate programs
in mining safety.
Besides master's
level programs, North China is interested in faculty exchanges and English
language experiences for its students and faculty.
"English is
the language of international business," President Yang said.
Accompanying President
Yang were Yanhua Chen, vice president; Guobing Liu, director of teaching
and research; Jingde Xu, director of the Training Department and Chuanrong
Su, associate professor and translator.
They attended the
Champagne Gala opening of The Broadway and More Series at the Givens
Performing Arts Center. After the Pembroke visit, the delegation will
travel to West Virginia to meet with mining industry officials.
