UNCP Announces
Promotion of Dr. Lisa L. Schaeffer
 The
University of North Carolina at Pembroke announced the promotion, effective
July 1, of Dr. Lisa L. Schaeffer to associate vice chancellor for Student
Affairs.
Dr. Schaeffer has
worked at UNCP for 18 years. She directed UNCP's Career
Services Center, which is ranked number one among the 16 UNC schools
for student satisfaction.
"It's a new
challenge, and it gives me the opportunity to work with students in
more situations, which is my first love," said Dr. Schaeffer.
Dr. Schaeffer's
new responsibilities include supervision of the campus judiciary system
and oversight of the Career Services, Counseling and Testing and the
Student Health centers.
As UNCP's chief
judicial officer, she said she will challenge students to make better
choices.
"I feel like
I can make a difference," she said. "Students motivate me,
and I learn as much from them as they do from me."
Dr. Schaeffer will
supervise student publications such as the yearbook and campus newspaper.
She will also plan, implement and evaluate staff development activities.
Lastly, she will coordinate research and assessment services related
to student needs.
She reports to Dr.
Diane O. Jones, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
"Dr. Schaeffer
has a proven track record for being an effective administrator and manager,"
said Dr. Jones. "She has wonderful interpersonal skills that will
serve her well in working with students, faculty and staff."

Dr. Jones said. "I look forward to having her joining the Office
of Student Affairs in her new role."
UNCP's rapid growth
is going to be a factor in planning for the future, Dr. Schaeffer said.
"We are all
very interested in expanding our staff to provide more programming and
maintaining good student-administrative ratios," she said. "We
continue to provide students individualized services.'"
Dr. Schaeffer headed
the Career Center since 1990. From 1984-89, she worked in the Office
of Admissions as a counselor, assistant director and then associate
director.
She received her
Bachelor of Arts in sociology, a Master's in counseling and her Doctorate
in educational administration from Campbell University.
"In graduate
school, I had an awakening when I opened the textbook for my first course
in student personnel services," said Dr. Schaeffer. "I saw
all the different administrative services offered to students, from
admissions to alumni relations. It was then I knew I wanted to be on
a college campus."
Dr. Schaeffer is
married to UNCP men's soccer coach, Mike Schaeffer. They have a son,
Ethan, who is five years old.
