UNCP Plays Host
to University Leaders From Germany

The president of
German university Pedagogische
Hochschule-Ludwigsburg was a recent guest at The University of North
Carolina at Pembroke.

Hartmut Melenk and Dr. Peter Dines, director of International Programs,
discussed cooperative agreements with UNCP for student and faculty exchanges
and the exchange of scientific knowledge and experience.
Pedagogische Hochschule-Ludwigsburg
is located in Stuttgart in southwestern Germany, a region known for
its 18th century palaces and automobile manufacturing. The university
has an enrollment of 3,500 and specializes in teacher education and
liberal arts education.
"Our university
is similar in many ways to UNC Pembroke," Dr. Dines said. "Our
specialized area is elementary and middle grades education."
UNCP and Pedagogische
Hochschule-Ludwigsburg have been working together for about a year already,
and three German students have spent a semester in Pembroke. A UNCP
student is at the German school this semester.
"The students
have been very enthusiastic about their experience at your university,"
Dr. Dines said. "We hope to work out a faculty exchange program
for next year."
The German educators
also visited UNC-Charlotte during their stay in the Carolinas. What
is the attraction to UNCP?
"We are especially
interested in your English language programs and the study of English
literature," Dr. Dines said. "These are things that we can
only get in the U.S."
"Our students
need to know a lot about the United States in order to teach about this
country at home," he said. "All of our (public school) students
take English from year one, and our English Department has grown tremendously."
Chancellor Allen
C. Meadors, who toured Asia this spring and signed five agreements with
foreign universities in the past year, is pleased with the prospects
of close ties between UNCP and Pedagogische Hochschule-Ludwigsburg.
"There are
some good opportunities for our faculty and students in Stuttgart,"
Chancellor Meadors said. "This is a university very similar to
us, and we are very fortunate to build ties to the world famous education
system in Germany."
"We expect
this to be a long and mutually beneficial relationship," he said.
