Ed Powers to Lead UNCP's School of Business

Dr. Ed Powers has been named interim dean of the School of Business at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, effective July.

This is not the first time, the veteran professor has been called on to lead the school. Dr. Powers was department chair for almost four years on two separate occasions.

He reports to Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Roger Brown.

"Dr. Powers, who has been at UNC Pembroke for 13 years, is an award-winning scholar and teacher in our School of Business," Dr. Brown said. "He also served as department chair on two previous occasions in his career. We welcome his experience and knowledge in leading the School of Business during the 2002-2003 year."

Dr. Powers said he welcomes the challenge of leading a strong business program.

"It is a collegial group of people who work well together," he said. "This is an exceptional group of scholars, and I am excited about taking our programs to the next level."

Dr. Powers said he will spend the summer becoming acquainted with his new responsibilities.

"I will begin the process of information gathering and laying groundwork," he said. "Our future is very bright and full of new initiatives."

"One of our goals is to gain international exposure for our students, programs and professors," Dr. Powers said. "We will also be expanding the use of information technology by offering an on-line undergraduate business degree in conjunction with state community colleges."

Dr. Powers' is an expert in personnel relations and human resources with many publications to his credit. Last year, he won an unprecedented two Dial Awards at UNCP for community service and scholarly work.

He was a tenured professor at East Carolina University and Clemson University. At Moorhead State University and Charleston Southern University, he was business department chair.

Dr. Powers received a Bachelor of Science in business administration and a Master's of Business Administration from West Virginia University and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.

An active community volunteer, Dr. Powers has contributed more than 600 hours of volunteer work at Pembroke Elementary School over the past three years. He lives in Lumberton with his wife Mary.
