UNCP Gets New
Director for Career Services
 The
University of North Carolina at Pembroke recently added a new member
to its family of student services. Dr. Denisha Sanders has been named
director of Career Services.
The delivery of
career services at UNCP begins during the freshman year and includes
services ranging from guidance and counseling in choosing a major to
resources for the transition into the job market.
She reports to Dr.
Lisa Schaeffer, associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
"I am thrilled
to have Dr. Sanders join our Career Services team," Dr. Schaeffer
said. "She brings a variety of experiences and talents to the position."
"Her years
of experience in student activities, fund raising and career services
are a perfect combination for directing the Career Center," she
said. "Dr. Sanders is genuinely interested in the concerns and
needs of students."
Although she has
broad experience in higher education administration, Dr. Sanders said
she enjoys interacting with students above all.
"I have really
enjoyed meeting the students here, and the services this Career Center
provides to them are very impressive," she said. "I wanted
to pursue a career in student affairs to work directly with students,
and this is a great opportunity to do so."
Dr. Sanders is taking
over the highest rated Career Center in the 16-campus UNC system, according
to annual surveys taken of students and recent graduates.
"I want to
maintain, and build on, the level of success the Career Center already
has attained," she said. "I am taking over a highly rated
program, so there are high expectations."
Dr. Sanders comes
to UNCP from Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., where she was the director
of Student Activities. She advised the Student Government Association,
Campus Activities Board and Student Recreation Council. Dr. Sanders
also advised the campus newspaper and yearbook staff.
At Wesleyan College,
she also performed fundraising duties as the director of annual giving.
At Mississippi State University, she was the assistant director and
an instructor at the university's Career Center.
A Florida native,
Dr. Sanders attended Florida State University and the University of
Virginia, where she received her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration.
She also has extensive experience in areas such as career development
and advising.
Dr. Sanders' list
of accomplishments and activities is extensive. In 1996, she received
the New Professional Award from the Southern Association for College
Student Affairs. She is also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and a member
of the American College Personnel Association.
Dr. Sanders has
also been published in the College Student Affairs Journal in 1997 and
in New Directions for Higher Education in 1994.
She is a member
of the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the Southern
Association for College Student Affairs and the National Association
for Campus Activities.
